192.168.0.1 - Private or Public IP address

Maybe you know that every network device, connected to the network, has its own unique IP - Internet Protocol Address. There are two different types of IP addresses – private IP and public IP. Public IP is assigned to the router's WAN interface by internet service provider. This address has to be unique across the entire Internet. But your router has a private IP address too. He is allowed only on private networks and doesn't need to be globally unique, becouse is not a direct access address. Router's private address are accessible only from a private network. The address 192.168.0.1 is a private IP address that is often the default address for certain broadband routers, like a TP-Link, D-Link,  Netgear and some others.

Can not access the router on 192.168.0.1 - Troubleshooting problems

Now let's talk about the most common problems when connecting to a router related to access to router management through http://192.168.0.1.

1. IP Address typing error

The IP address always contains 4 sets of numbers ranging between 0 and 255. One of the possible reasons why you couldn’t login to your router is because of a small typing mistake. here is a simple examples:

  • 192.168.o.1
  • 192.168.o.0.1
  • 192.168.0.l

In all these cases, there is the same error. Specifically, letters "o" and "l" are used instead of numbers 0 and 1. It is not right!

Instead of 192.168.o.1 and 192.168.o.0.1 you should have typed 192.168.0.1.

2. Address bar or Search bar in browser

The most popular users mistake - using browser search bar for typing IP address. It's wrong!
Please make sure is to type 192.168.0.1 to the address bar. Otherwise, you will go to the web page of the search results instead of the router's admin panel.

3. Router is using a different default IP address than 192.168.0.1

Basically, a default IP address is something you enter into your web browser to get access to your router’s configuration page. Using this IP address, the administrator can tweak his router, monitor and set up the LAN network and change the manufacturer’s settings. You can find default IP at their user manuals along with stick in label on the router.

Also, the address of the router may have been changed when it was configured earlier.
In this case you can do the following. On the computer connected to the router, run the command console and enter the command:

  • ipconfig for Windows
  • ifconfig for Linux

When you run the command, see what it says in the "default gateway" line.

4. Incorrect Username or Password

In most cases you will find the router login credentials by following places:

  • in the user’s manual;
  • on a sticker, which is normally placed under or the back router;
  • device manufacturer’s official web page.

The username "admin and" password "admin" are most commonly used. Also, you can try a common username and password combination: for example, some routers (e.g. D-Link and Tenda) use a username “admin” and the blank password.
If the default password does not fit, then you have to use the "Reset" button to resetting all current settings to the factory defaults.

5. IP Conflict in local area network

In network basics the same IP address can’t be used by two devices a single network segment. Otherwise situation leads to something called IP conflict can be.
In such case, either any of the two network devices or both the devices at once might not have any access to the internet. PC will receive an error such as: “There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network” or “Windows detected a conflict in the IP address”.

To solve the problem, follow this sequence of actions. Go to network adapter options and find TCP/IP protocol settings. In operation system Microsoft Windows 10 it look like this:

windows static ip address

If you are using a static IP, you can manually change that address to a different one. You must make sure that the new address to be used is not using.

The better option is to use the dynamic IP (by router's DHCP server), then the addresses will be distributed automatically. It look like this:

windows dynamic ip address
